Sofa Beds & Sleeper Sofas
A sofa bed — also called a sleeper sofa, pull-out couch, or convertible sofa — is one of the most practical pieces of furniture you can own. By day it's a full-size sofa for the living room. By night, with a few seconds of effort, it's a real bed for an overnight guest, a teenager's friend staying the weekend, or anyone who needs a comfortable place to sleep without dedicating a whole room to a guest bed.

Mathis Home stocks one of the deepest sleeper sofa selections in our region, covering every common style and size. Most are in stock and ready for local delivery within days, not the multi-week wait that comes with online-only retailers.
Types of Sofa Beds

  • Pull-out sleeper sofas are the traditional design: the cushions lift off and a hinged metal frame unfolds out and forward, revealing a thin innerspring or memory foam mattress folded inside. These give you the most authentic "real bed" feel and come in twin, full, queen, and occasionally king sizes. Most quality sleeper sofas use this mechanism.

  • Click-clack sofa beds (also called convertible sofas) skip the pull-out mattress entirely. The back of the sofa folds down flat, turning the seat and back into one continuous sleeping surface. They're easier to operate and lighter on price, but the sleeping surface is firmer and shorter than a true bed.

  • Futon-style sleepers work on a similar principle to click-clack but use a single thick cushion instead of separate seat and back pieces. They're best for occasional use, dorms, or smaller apartments where flexibility matters more than nightly comfort.

  • Sleeper sectionals combine an L-shaped or U-shaped sectional with a pull-out sleeper hidden in one of the seats. They're the right choice if you need full-time seating for four or more plus an occasional guest bed — and many include hidden storage under the chaise for sheets and pillows.

Sleeper Sofa Sizes

Sleeper sofas are sized by the mattress that pulls out, not by the sofa itself:

  • Twin Sleepers suit small apartments, dorms, or studios. Comfortable for one adult or a child.

  • Full sleepers are the most common size and fit comfortably in any standard living room. Sleeps one adult comfortably, or two if needed.

  • Queen sleepers are the most popular choice for households that host regularly. Two adults can sleep comfortably.

  • King sleepers are rare and typically only available in larger sectional designs.

Comfort Considerations

A modern sleeper sofa is substantially more comfortable than the metal-bar sleepers many people remember from decades past. Two things to check before buying:

  • The mattress. Innerspring is standard. Memory foam or gel-infused foam mattresses give meaningful nightly-use comfort and are worth the upgrade if the sofa will host frequent overnight guests. We carry both.

  • The mechanism. A quality pull-out frame opens smoothly without grinding or sticking, and locks the mattress flat without a noticeable cross-bar pressing through. Quality frames are built with reinforced steel and pressure-graded hinges.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sofa Beds & Sleeper Sofas

Is a sofa bed comfortable to sleep on every night? Yes, modern sofa beds are designed for regular nightly use, though comfort depends heavily on the mattress and mechanism. Innerspring mattresses, the standard option, are fine for occasional guests. For nightly use, look for a sleeper sofa with a memory foam or gel-foam mattress and a quality pull-out frame that lays flat without a noticeable cross-bar. The bed-in-a-couch designs from decades past earned a poor reputation that today's models have left behind. With the right mattress upgrade, a sleeper sofa can serve as a primary bed in a studio apartment or guest room.

What's the difference between a sleeper sofa and a futon? A sleeper sofa is a full sofa with a separate, fold-out mattress hidden inside the frame. When closed, it looks and functions like a regular sofa. A futon uses one continuous cushion that flattens out — it's both the seating surface and the bed. Sleeper sofas are generally more comfortable for nightly sleeping because the mattress is purpose-built for that role. Futons are typically less expensive, lighter, and better suited to dorms, studios, or occasional-use spaces. A sleeper sofa is the better long-term investment if guests stay regularly.

What size sleeper sofa do I need? Sleeper sofas are sized by the mattress that pulls out. Twin sleepers fit small apartments, kids' rooms, or studios and sleep one. Full sleepers are the most common size, fit any standard living room, and sleep one adult comfortably or two if needed. Queen sleepers are the most popular for households that host overnight guests regularly and sleep two adults comfortably. King sleepers are rare and usually only available in large sectional sleepers. To choose, measure the room — allow 60 to 80 inches of pull-out space in front of the sofa — and consider how often guests will stay over. Queen is the right answer for most living rooms.

How does a pull-out sofa bed work? A pull-out sleeper sofa hides a folded metal frame and thin mattress beneath the seat cushions. To open it, remove the seat cushions, grip the strap or front bar of the frame, and pull up and forward. The frame unfolds in two or three sections and lays flat. Quality mechanisms use reinforced steel and lock automatically when fully extended. To close, lift the mattress at the foot, fold the frame back in sections, and replace the cushions. Most pull-outs take less than 30 seconds to set up once you've done it once or twice.

Are sleeper sofas worth it? A sleeper sofa is worth it if you host overnight guests more than two or three times a year, or if you live in a space where a dedicated guest room isn't realistic — studio apartments, smaller homes, or homes where the office doubles as a guest room. For roughly the cost of a quality sofa, you get a sofa plus a guest bed without sacrificing floor space. The investment pays off the first time a friend or family member needs a comfortable place to sleep on short notice.

Can you put a regular mattress on a sleeper sofa? Standard sleeper sofas are designed for the specific thin (four to five inch) mattress they ship with — a regular bed mattress won't fit the folding frame. You can, however, upgrade the existing mattress to a thicker memory foam replacement designed for sleeper sofas, or add a two- to three-inch memory foam topper for significantly better comfort. Toppers are the easiest upgrade for guests who say the sleeper isn't quite comfortable enough.

What's the most comfortable sleeper sofa for everyday sleeping? For nightly use, look for a queen-size sleeper sofa with a memory foam or gel-foam mattress, a no-bar (or low-bar) pull-out mechanism, and a high-density seat cushion that holds its shape. Brands that specialize in sleeper sofas — Ashley, La-Z-Boy, Michael Nicholas Designs, and several of our house brands — tend to outperform generic convertible sofas on long-term comfort. A memory foam topper is the single best add-on upgrade for everyday sleeping.

Do sleeper sofas come with storage? Many do. Sleeper sectionals frequently include hidden storage under the chaise seat, typically deep enough to hold sheets, pillows, and a blanket for the pull-out. Some standalone sleeper sofas have under-seat compartments accessed by lifting the seat platform. Storage is a meaningful feature if you plan to keep dedicated guest bedding separate from your everyday linens.

How long does a sleeper sofa last? A quality sleeper sofa lasts seven to fifteen years with regular use, similar to a standard sofa. The mattress itself wears faster than the frame and may need replacement at five to seven years if used nightly. The pull-out mechanism is the most common failure point on lower-cost models, so paying for a reinforced steel frame and pressure-graded hinges meaningfully extends the useful life.

Is delivery free on sleeper sofas? Mathis Rewards members get free doorstep delivery on sleeper sofas in all five delivery zones. Non-members get free delivery in Zone 1; Zones 2 through 5 carry tiered delivery fees ($129–$199). Free curbside pickup is available at our Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Indio, and Ontario distribution centers. For an additional fee, our premium delivery includes in-home setup and installation — recommended for larger sleeper sectionals where the assembly is more involved.
